Snowboard Journal, 2004

Snowboarder

Communism has been a dirty word to Westerners, especially Americans, but I have always wondered what the Russian people thought about it, and what it´s like there now during the transition to capitalism. Russia has always been a mysterious place to me, with a crazy history that I´ve wanted to understand.

Powder Magazine, October 2003

Waiting in a customs line at Moscow´s domestic airport. I stare at a slab of stinky salmon stuck between two pieces of a cardboard baguette. This is breakfast. The ATM won´t spit out a single Russian ruble that I need to bribe the customs agents to allow my excess baggage. We´re trying to escape the city for the mountains, but at this point I´m not sure I even want to unpack my skis.

While Western Europe is a traditional destination for ski buffs, more and more adrenaline seekers are choosing vacations on Russian and former Soviet slopes.

By the time February rolls around, most of us feel the winter will be endless and we will never see green grass and relaxing summer sunshine again. But then there are those few among us who dream of the brisk winter days when the powder on the mountain slopes is perfect for an endless adrenaline rush.

Travel + Leisure, November 2003

Communism may have ended, but Russians are still playing follow-the-leader. What Boris Yeltsin did for tennis, Vladimir Putin is doing for skiing. Until recently, high cost, poor equipment, and dilapidated resorts have limited the appeal of the sport in Russia. After the president and his wife visited Krasnaya Polyana last spring, however, the neglected ski area in the western Caucasus began to flourish, with $1.5 million in major improvements, including more roads and a new terminal at the Sochi International Airport.

Thoughts From My Life, August 2007

I ended up booking through a travel agency. They were very helpful in arranging it (they are getting a cut) and I would recommend it to most people. They understand the ins and outs and what is possible or not. The company I used I am also going to recommend as they were a big part of making our trip a success, plus it eased a lot of my unease before I went.
